Ready to assemble Cabinets of every texture require maintenance to keep them in function for many years. If cabinets are not cleaned at regular interval of time then they may lose the luster and glaze like found in wood cabinets. People refrain from small maintenance cost but forget the entire renovation amount if these cook room cabinets lose their charm.

Once you have designed your kitchen, the task doesn’t ends there. You should maintain the cleanliness and mending of cabinets. Maintenance is similar to regular fuel added to cabinet vehicle for efficient functional driving. It’s not a thing to be scared of, in spite it is cost effective, as with small alterations you can retain them as new kitchen cabinet. Manufacturers make durable yet cheap cabinets. But this will be fulfilled only if owner takes basic care tips.

Nothing can stop dust, creatures like termites, moisture entering and penetrating cabinet. Maintenance includes repainting, refacing and cleaning of cabinets. Though to avoid such spoiling instances precautions need to be taken like:

Cleaning:

Wiping cabinets regularly with basic water over soft cloth will at least keep dust from settling permanently.

Using several spray solvents will prevent particles and crawling creatures to degrade the quality of cabinets. If you have traditional shaker kitchen cabinets then cleaning the space ceiling and cabinets is also crucial. Hence always start cleaning cabinets from top and not only clean the visible surface. Steel and golden knobs should be daily wiped out.

Using vinegar drops in small quantity for cleaning hardwood cabinets like oak kitchen cabinets and Maple kitchen cabinets will help the veneer coating last for longer time.

If the cabinets are looking dull and warped out, then without replacing them you can first clean them with liquid gold or lemon oil before going for urethane process. If this doesn’t work then probably your cabinets are really torn out.

Clean aluminum Kitchen Cabinetry with slight warm water and detergent.

Avoid use of harsh cleaning agents for wood cabinets as special aids and help is obtained with online vendors like The RTA store Inc. which guide you in every step of designing kitchen and even their maintenance with incredible services for user contentment.

Precautions:

Immediately clean the spill or spots on cabinet surface, before it develops into permanent stain.

Make sure to close cabinet drawers and doors properly after use. Don’t often use wet cloth for wiping as it will quickly affect the laminated Cheap Cabinets. The lamination will strip out soon. Avoid paste wax and polishes that contain and silicone. Wax is difficult to remove and accumulated dust easily.

Important note:

Liquid gold and lemon oil are effective to clean the oil furnished surface. Using them will help to retain the oil finish lamination. For non-oily surface it will just collect the dirt as you have put dust collector on DIY Kitchen Cabinets surface.

The use of solar shingles in roofing is a great way to go green and contribute in a small way to a better environment without compromising on the beauty of the house. In places where solar radiation is available, it makes sense to install features in the houses that utilize the solar resource. They are becoming a quite popular material for Salt Lake City roofing especially in Wasatch valley because of various advantages it offers.

Advantages of solar shingles

Many people are not very comfortable with huge solar panels on the top of the roof, thinking it spoils the exterior beauty of the house. But with this Salt Lake City roofing material, you can capture all the solar energy available without affecting the exterior look of the house. Solar panels are bulky, and can be damaged in a storm. With this roof, you do not face these problems, but still get all the advantages of solar power. They look like regular roofing but with a difference that solar power cell are incorporated into the structure of roof. With this roofing you will get the same durability and protection as the standard roofing material such as clay tiles, metal or wood shakes. Their weight is very light and residential roofer can install, replace and repair them very conveniently. The estimate for its installation is also quite low.

Cut down on your monthly energy bills

This Salt Lake City roofing material not only helps in heating, but the solar shingles charged with the solar energy can be attached to various electrical appliances in your home to cut down on your electricity bills. With this roof, you will notice a clear reduction in your monthly energy bill to the extent of 50 to 60 percent. It serves the dual purpose of protecting the roof structure as well as generating energy through sun light.

Environmentally friendly

It does not pollute the surroundings and is a good choice for Salt Lake City roofing in Utah. They just require sunlight to run the power generator and as long as they get sunshine, the technology keeps on producing renewable energy. If the roof of your house gets a decent amount of sun light each day you can approach a contractor for the construction of solar shingles roofing. If you are running short of money, there are many companies who provide services for financing the project. There is government support also available for installation of this kind of roofing in your house, and you can also apply for government grants if you are planning for its construction.

Residential Roofing is a post from: Home Improvement

For those who have built homes or are contemplating having building, one of the biggest points of concern is the roof. Residential roofing can be a tough call for most homeowners, especially in the wake of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and others. And with the recession still simmering on the backburner, homeowners are often left choosing between cost and stability. However, with easy upgrades and repair services available, managing low-cost but effective residential roofing is not so difficult after all.

All you need is to keep some of the factors in mind while looking for sturdy yet cost-effective residential roofing options for your home. Listed below are some of the prominent ones:

1.The construction firm – Choosing the right construction company is crucial to the safety and stability of any home, and is more so in the case of installing the roofing on a residential base. Research well, both in the real-world as well as online for the right firm to assign. Moreover, take profuse references from friends, neighbors and colleagues especially from those who have had their roofing installed very recently.

2.Location – If you are settling in a region that is calm and does not constitute much of a threat from natural disasters and the like, using conventional raw materials for your roofing can be dealt with. However, if your home is in a region that has witnessed (or has the potential of being affected by) natural disasters like forest fires, hurricanes or floods, metal and other sturdier roofing elements are encouraged to be used.

3.Availability of upgrades – Residential roofing is bound to degrade with time – due to natural causes as well as other issues. Therefore, regular upgrades, maintenance services and repair should be made a part of your deal with the contractors. If not, you may end up shelling a lot more than desired while soliciting repair work for your roof later on.

While you shuffle through these factors trying to make a choice between construction firms, make sure you also shop around for the best price available. Remember that the recession has affected the construction business as well, and prices will be lower than what they had been only 2 years back.

“Ja-Mar Roofing” happens to be one of the fewer online portals that combine the twin advantages of affordable prices and efficient roofing systems, available at the beck and call of its customers all across Austin. You can choose from a host of residential roofing options available on their official website.

Solar Heating Panels is a post from: Home Improvement

Solar heating panels are a vital step in the process of heating your home with renewable energy. If you are thinking about buying or installing solar panels to your roof, then read on to learn about the importance of renewable energy, how solar panels work and how you will directly benefit.

Solar heating panels stem from a great trend in modern renewable energy, using the sun to create power. Solar energy is clean, quiet, renewable and best of all, free. The conversion of sunlight to power is direct and effective in hotter climates, so why not take advantage of this great resource.

Solar heating panels are often optimized to work in conjunction with wind turbines, so fear not. If your locale is not reliably warm all year round, then wind is another effective method that is generally used to generate power for your home with renewable energy.

Solar heating panels you will find are stationed on rooftops, as that is typically where direct sunlight hits. They have a grid like pattern on them, also known as solar cells, which are embedded on the dark surface. These solar cells convert sunlight to energy, to your home.

Solar heating panels are easily built at home as the DIY market has shown us. There are many of us whoever have taken the plunge and decided to build our own. The projects are fun and you can get a little something back, extra energy. Anything that will take a few bucks off the power bill in this economy is welcome at my house.

So, you’re looking for a fundraising project for a school, sports team or construction project and you’re thinking about engraved bricks. Brick fundraising is pretty simple, but what are the pitfalls?

We talked to Larry Cannon (www. bricksculpture. com), who’s been engraving bricks for fundraisers since 1988. He offers the following advice before you embark on the campaign…. .

1. First look at your donor database. How likely are they to contribute to your new cause? Take nothing for granted. Don’t assume that people will donate without a good strategy.

2. Think about who you’re targeting. You should expect about 20% of your database to contribute. But…how interested are they in your project? How committed are they? How are they doing financially?

4. Think about the best time to mail donation requests. Timing is everything in fundraising.

5. Think of the best way to word it. Should you play on their sympathies or emphasize that their name on a brick is a memorial will last beyond their life?

6. The project chair will make or break the project. Don’t let just anyone do it…get volunteers with the time and energy to put into the project.

7. How much money do you want to raise? Come into the project with an established goal.

8. Decide how much money people will donate to purchase a brick. Subtract the costs from the brick manufacturer and the difference is direct profit. .

9. What about donor level appreciation? Do you want to honor different levels of donor contribution? If so…. how? Some options are brick placement, size of bricks, number of words on the brick, emblems or logos on the bricks….

10. Can you get services donated? Does someone in the group know a brick mason who’ll donate their time to lay the brick, build the wall or whatever? If not, the cost for hiring one must come from the raised donations.

This nigga is nice

Concrete Restoration is a post from: Home Improvement

Pattern imprinted concrete or pressed concrete, as it is sometimes known is a technique of creating decorative, hard wearing, patterned, coloured concrete for use on driveways, patios, car parks, walkways and shopping arcades.

It is a product that has been laid now across the world now for over 30 years, and is regularly used by well known companies such as McDonalds and KFC. Imprinted concrete has also been laid to vast areas of the Disney theme parks in Florida and Paris.

Imprinted concrete itself is a extremely hard wearing material, but left exposed to everyday use, and the elements, without protection, damage can start to occur.

When first laid installers of pattern imprinted concrete will always seal the surface with an acrylic based sealer to finish the job. This concrete sealer will protect the surface from the effects of the sun, frost, snow, vehicular use and staining.

One of the great things about imprinted concrete is that routine maintenance of imprinted concrete all few years is a easy diy job. All you really need to do is just wash down the surface with a pressure washer and simply apply one or two new coats of sealer. The problem is if this re-sealing is not carried out all few years problems can start to occur. With imprinted concrete if it is left un- protected it will start to fade, and the surface of the concrete can even start to break up from the effects of snow and ice.

Hopefully your pressed concrete has not started to deteriorate in this way, but if it has, do not worry, will the help of a pressure washer, paint brush, broom, acrylic sealer and some basic repair materials I am sure you can get your driveway or patio looking fresh and new again

The first thing to do is make sure that the surface has been properly cleaned, ideally with a pressure washer.

Before you start resealing make sure you have enough sealer for the job and some concrete rapid hardening repair compound (available from any decent diy shop or builders merchants) if there are repairs required. For imprinted concrete that has lost colour, you will also require some coloured pigment ( used by bricklayers to colour mortar) to tint the sealer, and mask any repairs.

Most areas of surface damage, and cracks can be easily repaired using the concrete repair compound. This material, when mixed with sealer will forms a fast drying paste, this can be simply troweled into defective areas using a bricklayers pointing trowel. Once the repairs are completed and the surface re-sealed, the previously damaged areas become almost undetectable.

You are now ready to start the re-sealing process, make sure the surface is dry, the temperature is between 10-21 degrees with no rain forecast for at least 4 hours after you have completed the work. Application of the imprinted concrete sealer is best carried out using a small soft haired broom in the same sweeping method as cleaning a floor. To rejuvenate the general colour (if necessary) and mask the repairs, colour tints can be sparingly mixed (to much pigment in the sealer could cause it to de-laminate from the concrete) directly into the sealer and then applied using a soft broom, or paint brush to touch in the repairs. It is always worth knowing that the sealer should always be applied sparingly, being careful to avoid the sealer pooling in the joints.

Most manufacturers of the sealer will recommend two coats of sealer to achieve a rich uniform finish. Once you have completed the sealing process remember to keep vehicles off it for at least 24 hours, with foot traffic generally okay after approx 2 hours.

To eliminate any chance of any weeds or growth on your driveway or patio expansion joints should be filled with mastic. A little tip here, generally for most coloured surfaces, apart from black, I would apply translucent mastic this soon becomes virtually invisible within the joints over a few months. The type of mastic you need for this job has been designed for external use, for example sealing around windows or guttering.

That’s it, job done, now your patterned imprinted concrete has been restored, a top up coat of sealer approx all 3-5 years should keep it looking great, with minimal up keep for many years to come.

Homeowners understand that good roofing is the most excellent protection for a house. A roof keeps out wind, rain, snow, hail, and the sun’s glow and warmth. However, knowing when to restore a roof and with what type of roofing material is often a complicated choice.

A new roof is a large asset and it’s also one of the most significant things you can make for the shelter and overall worth of your home. To achieve this, a roof’s exterior must be watertight and tough as well as supple enough to adapt to heat changes without cracking or otherwise losing its reliability.

Roofing shingles come in many styles and are made of many different materials. They vary in their layer materials and design, but the majority roofs consist of wood framing, flashing wood, roofing felt, and the surface roofing material.

Most homes nowadays have contemporary asphalt shingles that come in many varieties that give different looks in the shape of architectural shingles. There are also accessible from roofing suppliers different roofing systems such as steel roofing, copper roofing, slate roofing and composite roofing systems.

A lot of homeowners prefer metal roofing, which provides outstanding long-term protection, or slate roofing, which provides a pleasant artistic exterior.

Roofing systems typically receive attention only when they require maintenance. As long as a roof needs minimal maintenance and keeps the contents of a facility dry and safe, maintenance and engineering managers have little think about —or so the reasoning goes.

But roofing manufacturers say there is quite a bit to consider, especially when considering single-ply systems. According to manufacturers, these systems continue to garner interest, thanks in part to the cost and performance benefits they deliver.

Although varieties of single-plies have been around for more than 40 years, only in the last decade has the full performance potential of the systems been realized with the advent of new thermoplastic formulations. New plies also are increasingly economical, say manufacturers, and particularly favored by consumers when they carry Energy Star ratings.

System Options

Single-plies exist predominantly as two types: vulcanized unweldable elastomerics — nearly all of which are based on an ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber — and weldable thermoplastics such as polyvinyl chlorides (PVC) and thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO).

EPDM remains a popular roofing choice because of its durability and economy, manufacturers say. Usually ballasted or adhered, EPDM systems have a proven performance record after several decades of use.

PVC has also been around for several decades; because of the formulation of PVC, many roofing manufacturers recommend it for installations that require chemical-impervious roofing.

TPO is the fastest-growing category of single-ply systems. Manufacturers say its market share is beginning to grow because TPOroofingcosts are coming down and because of the numerous benefits of using the material.

System Benefits

“There’s significant push for TPO systems because of its environmentally friendly nature, because it’s a recyclable product, and because of its energy-saving characteristics,” says Mike McAuley, national sales and marketing manager for Versico Inc.

But TPO systems are newer products that do not have the performance history of some single-plies. Some manufacturers also say that TPO formulations continue to be tweaked to improve longevity and weathering.

“Ultimately, TPO formulation remains a balancing act between fire retardants in the formula and the stability of UV-light protection elements in the formula,” says Brian Whelan, vice president of sales and marketing for Sarnafil.

McAuley agrees, adding that most, if not all, TPO systems remain in an “incremental improvement stage.” Manufacturers have established durable base formulations but introduce small changes to improve certain qualities, including fire resistance.

TPO first was used more than 20 years ago to sheathe buried cable and protect other sub-grade materials.

McAuley says specifiers in institutional and commercial facilities are learning about TPO performance and more often choosing it over other single-plies because costs are coming down. He says TPO material costs are higher than those for EPDM, but installation labor costs are lower.

Sarnafil’s Whelan says another reason specifiers favor TPO is because uncolored versions frequently carry an Energy Star rating. To meet Energy Star

“Increasing numbers of property owners seek the benefits of reflective roofing,” says John Gardner, low-slope roofing marketing manager for GAF Materials Corp. “You get the potential of energy savings, with distinct environmental benefits and the good public relations opportunities that also come with it.”

By reflecting solar energy, reflective roofing lessens summertime cooling loads, saving facilities money. Because Energy Star roofing by definition has high emissivity — giving off heat, rather than holding it — it also reduces the urban heat island effect, Whelan says.

Keeping it Clean

Over time, however, roofing materials accumulate dirt or grow mold, lessening roof reflectivity. To continue reaping the benefits of reflective roofing, managers should clean the roof, using a power washer, a minimum of once annually.

Mold is a sensitive topic for roofing suppliers and maintenance managers alike, one manufacturer says. Some companies, including Stevens, use fungicides or algaecides in TPO formulations to combat mold growth. But these biocides do not always prevent the buildup of mold and mildew, and some might lose effectiveness over time.

Other mold-eradication options exist, especially for the Southeast United States, where geography and weather conditions tend to support mold growth.

“Mold grows on all kinds of roofing materials, not just single-ply,” says Sarnafil’s Whelan. “We’ve discovered that water passed over zinc kills fungal growth. For sloped roofs, Sarnafil is investigating incorporating zinc ridge strips so that a natural rainwater wash kills roof molds.”

GAF makes a family of membranes designed to fight molds, and the company is establishing a mold resource page on its Web site to give managers information on strategies to fight mold. Regardless of the methods used to prevent mold build-up, manufacturers stress the need to wash roofing regularly.

“The only way to keep a roof clean and truly, effectively get rid of mildew is to spray the roof,” McAuley says.

Maintenance Matters

Also vital to the health of single-ply roofing systems are regular inspections of the membrane. Manufacturers encourage maintenance managers to schedule roofing inspections at least yearly, to clear debris and check seams, flashing joints and vent boots for signs of damage. If protective coatings are used, managers also should have inspectors check and repair those as needed.

Gardner recommends managers keep a roof log and offers the following tips to keep single-ply roofing in top shape: criteria, low-slope roof materials must have an initial solar reflectance greater than 65 percent. After three years in place, reflectivity must remain greater than 50 percent.

Maintain a roof maintenance file, keeping a log of repairs or service done to the roof, as well as other work not directly related to the roof, such chiller maintenance, that requires rooftop traffic. The log should include inspection dates, with notes of any findings.

Inspect roofs twice yearly.

Inspect roofs after severe weather. Severe weather, including hail and strong winds, can damage roofing.

Promptly remove debris from roof.

Minimize rooftop traffic.

“Most damage to roofing occurs during construction, particularly if other trades use the roof as a staging area,” Whelan says.

Gardner agrees that workers are often a common cause of membrane punctures.

“Minimizing the number of people and the need for them to be on the roof helps maximize membrane integrity,” he says.

TPO Trends

Until several years ago, U.S. manufacturers crafted TPO membranes in thicknesses of 45-60mm. Meanwhile, European manufacturers were creating thicker membranes. But that has changed. Now, U.S. manufacturers have bulked up their ply thicknesses, making membranes up to 80mm thick.

“I’m seeing more customers requesting thicker membranes, switching, say, from 48mm to 60mm membranes,” Whelan says. “Generally, there’s no difference in labor costs for different thicknesses. The only cost difference is in the material itself, and those costs mostly aren’t that significant. Remember that thicker materials are less likely to puncture, will last longer and carry longer factory warranties.”

That is why Whelan also recommends that when bidding out jobs, managers should ask for bids on at least three membrane thicknesses. Many specifiers also are increasingly choosing mechanically fastened membranes over adhered or ballasted.

“It can be difficult and frustrating to find leaks on ballasted roofing because it requires contractors to move aside massive amounts of aggregate,” Whelan says.

Manufacturers also say that mechanically fastened systems are stronger and require less installation time than adhered or ballasted systems. Tom Gallivan, marketing manager for Stevens Roofing Systems, says mechanically fastened systems use few, if any, adhesive solvents, a consideration for managers who want to maximize environmental responsibility.

Although PVC and EPDM remain appropriate choices in some environments, TPO has emerged as a growing player in the single-ply roofing market. The material’s combination of strength, energy-efficiency returns and economy makes it an increasingly appealing option for managers.

Despite these benefits, managers need to invest the time to conduct regular rooftop inspections, minimize roof traffic, and — when using an Energy Star roof — wash the membrane to help it retain its efficiency.

Pavers is a post from: Home Improvement

Is your concrete or asphalt driveway an eyesore? Do you need to create an attractive retaining wall? Although most people use garden pavers to create patios, driveways and other hardscaping elements are often created using garden pavers, as well.

More and more homeowners are tearing up their cracked and stained concrete or asphalt driveways. These people are turning their driveways from an eyesore to a focal point by laying brick, concrete, or interlocking pavers. They often match the driveway pavers to the pavers used on walkways and patios to give the impression that the driveway is just an extension of the outdoor living area.

Before you use standard pavers for your driveway, be sure to check the manufacturer’s weight recommendations. Some pavers are too fragile to stand up to the constant stress of automobiles driving back and forth over them. Driveway pavers are manufactured specifically to handle constant wear and tear from automobiles. Before using your driveway, be sure that you use a sealing fluid on the pavers. Oil leaks, gas spills, and dirt are almost impossible to remove from unsealed pavers.

Building retaining walls used to involve days of hard labor. It is hard to create the proper angle needed so that the wall does not collapse and building a stacked stone wall is like assembling a large puzzle. However, with the advent of interlocking pavers, it is no longer impossible for inexperienced handymen to quickly create strong and attractive retaining walls.

Special interlocking stones have been created specifically for building interlocking retaining walls. When the pavers interlock, the wall is automatically set back at the proper angle to avoid over stressing the wall. Of course, homeowners also still use concrete and brick pavers to create stacked retaining walls. Interlocking retaining wall pavers can also be used to create attractive matching step risers.

Creating a stepping stone path is probably the most popular use for garden pavers. Stepping stones are easy to lay down in tight spots. You can set pavers into place one at a time instead of digging up the entire area as you would have to do if you were laying a walkway. Stepping stones can be used separately, as well. Although you can use standard concrete or brick pavers as stepping stones, concrete stepping stones with a pebbled surface give people who are stepping from paver to paver added traction. No matter which pavers you choose, don’t forget that the project you create with them will be the foundation for your garden and a backdrop for your plants.
